What temperature should I set my heat to in the winter?
The best setting is the lowest temperature at which your family is comfortable. Most find it comfortable at a setting of 19-21 degrees. You can save up to three percent for each degree you lower your thermostat temperature.
What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?
Programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. They also allow you to automatically control the temperature in your home at different times of day by setting your desired program.
How often should I have my heating and air conditioning system serviced?
We recommend that the heating and air conditioning system each be serviced once a year. This ensures your system is working as efficiently as possible, and is often a condition to maintain your warranty.
How close to the outdoor part of an air conditioning system should I plant shrubs or flowers?
We generally recommend that plants or shrubs should not be closer than 18 inches. Air conditioners need intake air to operate efficiently. If air cannot circulate, the unit could build up heat and require service.
How long will my new heating system last?
While the life span of a home heating system can vary from one model and type to another, you can generally expect a new system to last from 10 to 15 years. Some types do last longer and with proper maintenance service, many home heating systems can outlast their projected lifespan.
What are furnace ratings?
Furnaces are rated by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratio, which is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel consumed.Like the kilometers per liters rating on your automobile, the higher the AFUE rating, the lower your fuel costs. All furnaces manufactured must meet at least 78 percent AFUE. If your furnace is 10 to 15 years old, it very well may fall below the current furnace minimum and waste energy. This doesn't mean that you should only look for a furnace with the highest AFUE rating. The efficiency rating is just one factor to consider when looking at a new furnace.Furnaces use electricity to run fans and motors. The amount of electricity used varies greatly depending on the type of furnace. Be sure to check electricity usage prior to making a purchase decision.
