A working fireplace is a holiday essential! When yours stops working, it’s natural to think you need a repair right away. While most gas fireplace issues should be handled by a certified technician, there are a few simple checks you can safely try first. These may help you rule out small problems and get your fireplace running again.
Start with General Safety Checks
Clean the Exterior Area: Dust on or around the unit can affect performance or cause a mild burning smell the first time you turn it on for the season. A quick wipe-down can help.
Check Batteries: If your fireplace uses a remote control or wireless wall switch, try replacing the batteries—they die more often than people expect.
Confirm Power: Many fireplaces use electric ignition. Make sure the unit is plugged in and the breaker is on.
Basic Gas Fireplace Troubleshooting
Fireplace Will Not Turn On or Stay Lit
Gas Supply: Ensure the main gas valve to the fireplace is fully open.
Pilot Light: Check whether the pilot light is on. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable, do not attempt to relight—contact a technician.
Reset the Controls: If your remote or switch is unresponsive, try turning the fireplace power off at the breaker for a few minutes, then switch it back on. This can resolve minor control module issues.
Important: Many ignition, sensor, or component issues must be handled by a certified technician. If the fireplace still won’t ignite or stay lit, stop troubleshooting and call a professional.
Unusual Smells or Sounds
Mild Burning Smell: A light smell is common after long periods without use. Running the fireplace on high for 20–30 minutes usually clears it.
Gas Smell: A strong gas odour is an emergency. Turn off the gas supply, leave the area, and contact a professional immediately.
Clicking or Whistling: Some clicking is normal as the fireplace heats up or cools down. Loud or persistent clicking, whistling, or any unusual noise should be assessed by a technician.
When to Call a Professional
If basic checks don’t resolve the issue, or if you notice any of the following, contact a certified technician:
- A persistent gas smell
- The fireplace shuts off repeatedly
- Flames are yellow or orange instead of blue
- Loud or unusual noises
- The pilot won’t stay lit
- Any issue that feels unsafe or beyond your comfort level
