Mulled Cider on the Big Green Egg

Mulled cider

There is nothing more comforting on a cold winter evening than a warm mug of spiced cider. Using the Big Green Egg, you can prepare mulled cider that fills your home with festive aromas and delivers rich, seasonal flavour. This recipe is perfect for holiday gatherings or relaxing nights by the fire.

Ingredients (Serves 8)

  • 1 litre dry cider
  • 150 ml cider-apple brandy
  • 250 ml apple juice
  • 75 g brown sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 star anise pods
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 apple, sliced

Equipment

Set up your Big Green Egg for direct cooking with the stainless steel grid in place. Use Canadian Maple charcoal for the best flavour. Target temperature: 160°C (320°F).

Instructions

  1. Combine cider, brandy, apple juice, brown sugar, spices, and fruit slices in a pot.
  2. Place the pot on the preheated Egg and heat until the mixture is just simmering. Simmer for about 30 minutes.
  3. Do not allow the cider to boil. Simmering ensures the spices and fruit infuse gently without evaporating too much liquid.
  4. Taste the cider and adjust sweetness with additional sugar if desired.
  5. Serve in mugs with a slice of orange or apple and a cinnamon stick for garnish.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve as a welcome drink for guests.
  • Offer after outdoor winter activities.
  • Pair with roasted vegetables, stews, bread, and cheese for a complete seasonal experience.
  • Garnish with extra orange slices, apple slices, or cinnamon sticks for presentation.
