There are few things more offensive than your air conditioner deciding to quit on the hottest day of the summer.

One minute you’re comfortably enjoying your home. The next? You’re standing over a floor vent wondering if it’s actually blowing air or if you’re just imagining it.

Before you assume the worst (or start pricing out window units in a panic), take a deep breath. Not every air conditioner issue is a major repair, and there are a few simple things you can safely check before giving us a call.

Here’s what to do if your AC suddenly stops working during a heatwave.

Step 1: Check Your Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how often this solves the mystery.

Take a quick look to make sure:

• It’s set to Cool
• The temperature is set lower than your home’s current temperature
• The display is on and responsive
• The batteries (if applicable) aren’t dead

Sometimes it’s as simple as a setting getting bumped without anyone noticing.

Step 2: Check Your Air Filter

If we had a dollar for every service call solved by replacing a clogged filter…

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work much harder than it should. In some cases, poor airflow can even cause the evaporator coil to freeze, stopping your AC from cooling properly.

If your filter looks dusty, grey, or clogged, replace it with a clean one.

It’s one of the easiest ways to improve your system’s performance, and your indoor comfort.

Step 3: Take a Peek at Your Breaker Panel

Sometimes your air conditioner loses power because a breaker has tripped.

If you notice the AC breaker sitting in the middle position or switched off, reset it once.

If it trips again, don’t keep resetting it.

Repeated breaker trips usually indicate a larger electrical problem that should be diagnosed by a licensed technician.

Step 4: Check the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser needs room to breathe.

Take a quick walk outside and make sure:

• Leaves or grass aren’t blocking the unit
• Branches haven’t fallen against it
• Nothing is restricting airflow around the equipment

A little housekeeping around the unit can make a surprisingly big difference.

Step 5: Is It Frozen?

This one sounds backwards, but yes, your air conditioner can freeze during a heatwave.

If you notice ice on the refrigerant lines or outdoor unit, turn your thermostat from Cool to Off, then switch the fan to On.

What You Shouldn’t Do

When your house starts feeling like a sauna, it’s tempting to try everything.

A few things to avoid:

• Don’t set the thermostat to 15°C hoping it’ll cool faster. Air conditioners cool at a steady rate, regardless of how low you set the temperature.
• Don’t keep resetting breakers if they continue tripping.
• Don’t ignore strange noises, burning smells, or water leaks.
• Don’t continue running a frozen system.

Sometimes the fastest way to a bigger repair bill is trying to “push through” a problem.
