Heating System Blowing Cold Air? You May Need Furnace Repair!

Furnace Repair

With the holiday season in full swing, many of us will be hosting parties with friends and family. Having a furnace blow cold air through the home can definitely put a damper on festive celebrations. More often than not, there are easy solutions to the problem, however, if you can’t fix it yourself, don’t hesitate to call for furnace repair!

Check Your Thermostat

It might sound silly, but many times we get called out to homes to flip a switch or change batteries in a thermostat. Before calling for heating repair, check that the thermostat is set to HEAT (as opposed to COOL) and the fan is on AUTO (as opposed to ON). If you have the thermostat set to ON, the furnace blowers will continuously force air through the house, even if it hasn’t been heated.

Clean Air Filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow out of the furnace. When the filter becomes clogged, it can cause the furnace to overheat and engage the limit switch (the safety feature built in to the furnace). With the limit switch engaged, only cold air will blow from the furnace. Check your air filter monthly and replace when needed to prevent overheating. With this simple monthly furnace maintenance task, you can prevent future costly repair bills as continuous furnace overheating can lead to a damaged heat exchanger.

Check the Standing Pilot Light

If you have an older furnace, chances are you also have a standing pilot light (the light is always ignited in your system). Standing pilot lights can go out accidentally and simply need to be reignited to have warm air blowing throughout your home again.

Newer furnaces have electrical igniters and will require a heating repair technician to come in and replace the ignition system.
