Time to Start Thinking About Snow and Winter AC Maintenance

winter AC maintenance

The autumn scarves are out, pumpkin spice lattes are back and soon Ottawa will be blanketed in snow. The harsh Ottawa winter can be dreadful and can cause damage to your condenser unit—that can lead to expensive AC repair bills next summer. Make sure your compressor is properly winterized and follow our winter AC maintenance tips.

  1. Turn the Breaker to the Outdoor Unit OFF
The first thing you should do as part of your winter AC maintenance is to ensure that the circuit is off to your outdoor unit. Failing to turn off the breaker could cause the condenser to turn on during an unusually warm winter day.
    .
  2. Rake the Leaves
Leaves and debris around your condenser can make their way inside the unit causing damage. Be proactive and keep the area around the equipment clear—this includes branches, leaves and other yard waste.
    .
  3. Visually Inspect Condenser for Damage
If left unrepaired, cracks and rust can cause expensive damage to your condenser. After clearing debris from the unit, make sure to inspect it and call a professional cooling technician if you spot something that needs to be repaired.
    .
  4. Cover the Condenser for the Winter
We encourage all our clients to cover their condensers for the winter with an AC cover. With our harsh winters, a cover can help prevent snow and water from entering the unit. Make sure the condenser is dry before covering for the winter.

Winter AC maintenance should be ongoing. Make sure to check the condenser periodically to clear any branches or leaves that have accumulated and to ensure that the cover is still secure after harsh Ottawa winter storms.
