The best time to replace the AC and furnace system is before they break down. However, when a homeowner discovers that half of their system no longer works and needs to be replaced, they’re faced with a choice: replace only the broken equipment or replace the whole system.
When faced with this choice, it’s important to take into consideration a number of options, but the most important one is how well matched the systems will be if you only replace one part of it.
To achieve maximum efficiency and home comfort, your heating and cooling systems should be matched; meaning they should be designed to work together.
For example, in a central air conditioner and furnace system, both units use the same blower to circulate air. Replacing the air conditioning unit without upgrading the furnace will not significantly increase your home comfort because it’s still relying upon the old blower. In this instance, replacing both parts of the home comfort system would be the best option.
If both your heating and cooling systems are older, it’s probably best to schedule AC and furnace replacement together to ensure maximum efficiency, home comfort and longevity. Plus, when you replace your whole home comfort system together—you can often get better savings through installation, government rebates and take advantage of manufacturer promotions.
