On November 7th at 2:00 am, we turn the clocks back and “gain” the hour that we “lost” in March. As part of the Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries campaign, Team Harding wants to remind all Ottawa homeowners to check and change smoke alarms batteries this weekend.
According to a national study commissioned by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs,
19% of Canadians have never replaced their smoke alarm batteries.1
Starting a tradition of changing smoke alarm batteries at the beginning and end of Daylight Savings Time ensures that homeowners are checking these important life-saving devices at least twice a year. While batteries might last longer than six months, the City of Ottawa still recommends changing the batteries twice a year.
As you change the batteries, also make sure to test the device to ensure it’s in proper working order. If you find that your smoke alarm is going off a lot — it might just be dirty. Gently clean the unit with a vacuum cleaner to remove dust particles.
While this campaign specifically focuses on changing batteries in smoke alarms, we also urge all homeowners to check and change batteries in their carbon monoxide detectors. As we head into the cold winter season, there is an increased risk of deadly carbon monoxide building up in homes. This colourless, odourless gas can be deadly and a carbon monoxide detector is the only way to help protect your family.
Harding Heating & Air Conditioning has been the Ottawa Region’s most trusted home comfort provider for over 24 years. We want you and your family to stay safe and we hope you’ll incorporate changing your smoke alarm batteries into your daylight saving time routine each year.
