Four Factors That Impact the Cost of a New AC

new ac

Thinking about upgrading your air conditioner so you can beat the heat this summer? There are many factors to consider when shopping around for a new AC and the entire process can feel a bit overwhelming. We’ve put together a list of the four major factors that affect the cost of a new AC so you can make your decision with confidence.

1. Type of System
One of the main factors that will determine the cost of a new AC is the type of system you decide to install. For example, a central air conditioning unit will have a different price compared to a ductless mini-split system. It’s important to consult a certified HVAC professional to see which system best suits your home comfort needs and budget.

2. Efficiency
Although a brand new AC will typically be more efficient than an older unit, new air conditioners will still vary in how efficiently they can cool your home. It’s important to consider the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating when choosing a new AC, as this can lower the operation cost by increasing energy efficiency but can cost a bit more to install.

3. Ductwork
If you decide to go with central air conditioning, you’ll also need to have the necessary ductwork installed. If you need new or updated ductwork, this can impact the overall installation cost. If you already have sufficient ductwork in place, it’s important to make sure there are no leaks or other damage which could affect the efficiency and cooling performance of your new system.

4. Home & System Size
Finally, you will want to take into account how large your home is, as this will determine the size of your new cooling system. If a system is too small for a home, it will work harder than it’s supposed to and not operate as efficiently. On the other hand, a system that is too large could lead to higher energy bills, inconsistent temperatures and short cycles. To ensure your home comfort system isn’t too large or small, you should have an HVAC professional correctly size the unit by assessing your home and doing a load calculation.
