Air conditioners require regular professional maintenance in order to keep them running properly. But it’s also important to be able to spot and solve problems that don’t require professional repair. We’ve put together some helpful troubleshooting tips so you can identify common AC problems before having to call an HVAC professional.
AC Won’t Turn On: One of the most common AC problems is when your system just won’t turn on. The first thing to check is your thermostat. You’ll want to ensure that it’s set to “COOL” and not “HEAT.” You can also check to see if there’s a blown fuse or tripped circuit that could be causing the issue. If your AC still won’t turn on, the problem could be with the motor or compressor, which will require professional service.
Inadequate Cooling: If your air conditioner turns on but isn’t cooling the air in your home sufficiently, the problem could be the result of a dirty condenser. Check the outside unit and clear away any leaves, weeds and other debris that could be blocking air circulation. You should also check that the air filter is clean and replace if needed as a clogged filter can lead to inadequate cooling by restricting airflow. If your AC is still not cooling properly after troubleshooting, the issue could be with the compressor or refrigerant levels, meaning you’ll have to contact an HVAC professional.
Short Cycling: Another common AC problem is when the system is frequently turning on and off—known as short cycling. Make sure to check and replace the filter every month during peak cooling season, as this is when it’s most likely to accumulate dirt. If changing the filter doesn’t help, Harding Heating & Air Conditioning can come out and help diagnose the problem.
