If you are experiencing furnace problems,
try these fixes before calling for professional heating repair.
Check the Thermostat
Sometimes the thermostat settings are accidentally changed. Make sure the thermostat is turned to HEAT and the temperature is set high enough to engage the heating system. Also, make sure there are working batteries in the thermostat.
Check the Furnace Filter
Running the furnace with a clogged filter can restrict airflow and trip a safety mechanism, turning off the heating system. Check the filter and replace it if it’s full of dust and other debris.
Check Furnace Switch and Breaker
If a clogged furnace filter tripped the breaker, it will have to be reset after replacing the filter. It’s also worth investigating the furnace switch (looks like a light switch and is located near the heating system). If the furnace switch was accidentally turned off, the heating system will not work.
Check Vents and Registers
Furniture and curtains can block the air from vents and registers. It’s always a good idea to take a walk through your home and ensure that all vents and registers are free of obstructions.
If the above suggestions didn’t fix your furnace problems, you’ll want to call for professional service. A certified technician will need to inspect the system to diagnose the issue and offer a solution.
