Replace Your Air Filter
Although it’s good practice to replace your filter to get the most out of your air conditioner, it’s equally as important to the efficient operation of your furnace. The heating and cooling systems in your home both use the same ductwork to disperse air, and therefore both use the same filter. It is recommended that you change your air filter at least every 90 days, but that number reduces as you add more people and pets to a household. Our number one AC tip for every homeowner is to inspect their air filter and change it if necessary.
Clean and Clear Space Around Your AC
During the summer those pesky weeds tend to accumulate around your AC and can create blockages once they die at the end of the season. Before shutting it down for the year, be sure to remove any weeds, grass, or other foliage that may be encroaching on the space around your AC unit. There should be at least two to three feet of open space around your air conditioner so be sure to remove any pool toys or other obstructions if they were placed or stored around the unit during the summer.
Schedule Preventative Maintenance
The best AC tip to ensure your cooling system makes it through the harsh winter and comes out the other side summer ready is to book a preventative maintenance appointment. A certified technician can complete any necessary repairs and replace worn parts, so your unit doesn’t further degrade over the winter. They will also thoroughly clean the debris from unreachable areas inside of your air conditioner’s coils, so the obstructions don’t become further lodged into the system and cause damage.
