Why Duct Cleaning in the Fall is Important

fall duct cleaning

As the leaves begin to change, signalling the end of summer, homeowners will be shutting their windows for the last time until next year. The air inside your home will now be in a closed cycle, so if you haven’t gotten your ducts cleaned in the last 3-5 years (or since a major renovation) allergens and other loose debris could seriously affect your indoor air quality, which is why it’s important to schedule duct cleaning this fall.

Most of us try to leave our windows open whenever we can over the summer, so we can get as much fresh air as possible before the cold weather arrives. Fresh air is great, but the dust, pollen, and other contaminants that enter your home aren’t. Getting your ducts cleaned in the fall is the best way to ensure these contaminants don’t become trapped in your home over the winter. If anyone in your home has allergies or a respiratory illness, the pollen and allergens that become trapped inside can be extremely harmful to their health.

Over time, your ductwork can become clogged with dust, debris, and pet hair. If you don’t get your ducts cleaned every few years, these blockages can promote the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause the air in your home to smell musty. Mold spreads quickly, so if the air in your home has a noticeable odour, you may already have a mold problem. It’s a good idea to get your ducts cleaned in the fall so that you aren’t stuck breathing in smelly and potentially harmful air throughout the fall, winter, and spring.

Having debris in your ductwork can also negatively impact the efficiency of your furnace. If the air circulating throughout your home doesn’t have a clear path, it can cause your HVAC system to work harder than it needs to. This can lead to increased utility bills and potentially diminish the lifespan of your furnace. Getting your ducts cleaned in the fall, every 3-5 years before you fire up your furnace for the season, ensures it can operate efficiently and reduces the wear and tear on your system.
