Is It Time to Replace Your Heating and Cooling Systems?
Before you decide to replace one or both of your systems, you’ll need to determine whether it’s time to replace them or not. On average, HVAC systems last for 10-15 years, but it depends on how much they get used and how they’ve been maintained over the years. Aside from age, there are a few ways you can tell that it’s time to find a replacement for your furnace and air conditioner, including:
Weird sounds: If you start hearing whirring, clunking, and banging sounds coming from either your furnace or air conditioner, it’s an indication that something is wrong, and it could also mean that you’ll need to replace your system soon.
Increased utility bills: Seeing minor increases in your monthly utility bills is normal, but if your bills are increasing well beyond the standard price per kilowatt-hour increases, then odds are your system is inefficient and running more than it needs to.
Constant cycling: It’s natural for your heating and cooling systems to cycle off and on periodically throughout the day, but if it’s happening every couple of hours, something isn’t right. The problem could be caused by a number of issues, but it could be a sign that it’s time to replace your HVAC system.
Why Is It a Good Idea to Replace Your Furnace and AC at the Same Time?
Replacing your air conditioner and furnace together can seem like an expensive undertaking, but it actually saves you money in the long term.
Energy Efficiency: The air conditioning and heating systems manufactured today are much more energy efficient than the systems of 15 or 20 years ago. You’ll notice substantial savings on your monthly bills if you choose to replace both systems simultaneously because both of your systems will be far more efficient. Another plus to purchasing an AC unit and heating system together is that they have been specifically designed to work together, which affords both units a longer life.
Cost Efficient: Having both units replaced at the same time will also save you money on the installation costs in terms of labour because the HVAC technicians can replace both of the systems in one go. Also, when the furnace and AC are installed at the same time, they are both under warranty in the event something should need to be repaired. Manufacturers may not be obligated to honor the warranty of a new heating or cooling system when it is combined with an older one.
Take Advantage of Grants & Rebates: Although it’s not always the case if you plan ahead and start looking for replacement units for your furnace and air conditioner, you can take advantage of some excellent deals. The Canadian Government and Enbridge Gas are currently offering grants and rebates to help Canadians pay for the installation of a heat pump system. Since heat pumps are so efficient, and they work as both a heating and cooling system, their installation is being incentivized!
