Due to general humidity, wear and tear, and other in-home conditions, it’s not uncommon for the average homeowner to experience mould in their HVAC system at least once in their lifetime. However, mould is not something that you should worry about unless you have just cause to assume this may be the case. One of our most frequently asked questions is how to tell if there’s mould in your HVAC system, here’s how you can tell.
Visual Inspection
The most obvious sign that you may have mould in your HVAC system is the visual presence of mould in or around your furnace or air conditioner. You don’t have to be an HVAC expert to take a look in your system, here are a few places to check:
- Outside or around HVAC system
- HVAC joints
- Outside of your air conditioner coil (above furnace)
- Inside air conditioner service door
- Lift register covers to check ductwork for mould
Odours From System
Another sign that may alert you to mould in your HVAC system is an unusual and unpleasant smell coming from your furnace or air conditioner. If you’re not sure whether or not there is a strange smell coming from your system indicating the presence of mould, simply leave your home for an hour or more and come back in with a “fresh nose”. If you smell any musty or mildewy odours, this may be a sign that you have mould in your HVAC system.
