Silver and gold, silver and gold…Or, perhaps, you prefer red and green. How about white and red? Are you a traditionalist opting for the classic Christmas colours or do you like to switch it up every season? Either way, there are few things that are more festive than a decorated fireplace and mantel. There’s so much you can do, how do you decide? We’ve narrowed it down for you with these holiday fireplace and mantel decorating tips.
Colour Palette
First, select your colour scheme. There are so many festive colour combinations that you might never have considered. Of course, there’s the obvious ones we mentioned earlier, but here are a few that we love this season:
- White on white with small splashes of colour
- White with layers of gold
- Red, white and gold
- Ivory or burlap with forest green accents
- Black background with white and green features
The colour pattern you go with will largely depend on the colour of your fireplace. Sometimes the best way to complement a black or white fireplace is with touches of forest green and red and white accents. This less traditional approach provides an elegant yet modern feel in any home.
Lights
Light up your fireplace a little bit more over the holidays with string lights, candles, or lanterns. We love a nice green garland sprinkled with some twinkly white lights across the mantel. Bring some freshness into your home by gathering pieces of evergreen trees and placing them strategically in place of a garland. Pair your natural garland with some pom poms or dried orange decorations to create a rustic, country Christmas look. Some people feature candles atop their mantel, amongst the other decor and accessories. We recommend battery-powered candles as real ones could pose a fire hazard.
Accessories and Accents
Sometimes a simple wreath above the fireplace and a sweeping garland across the mantel are all you need to create that warm holiday feel. But, why not experiment with different decorations and their placement? Put together a whole scene by placing bigger holiday decor pieces on the floor near and around the fireplace.
Larger mantels are also a great spot to put your Santa village. Weave some white garland through it for the look of snow. Or, invite the kids in to help hang their stockings – just be cautious of any potential fire hazards.
Another trend we’re seeing is the use of calligraphy signs – place them asymmetrically atop the mantel and add a few rustic brown trees to complete the minimalist look. We love this style but we’re also big fans of the more traditional fireplace decor – with garland dotted with baubles and holly.
Festive Fireplaces and Merry Mantels
However you decorate your fireplace and mantel this holiday season, we know that it’s going to be the focal point of all your festivities. It really doesn’t take much because a glowing fireplace already provides the warmth and beauty that comes to mind when we think about Christmas and the holidays.
