If you skipped fall maintenance and prep, this is your chance to winterize your home and HVAC so you and your family can stay warm and cozy all season.
Winterize Your Home: Inside
Change Air Filters
? Replace or clean your HVAC system’s air filters to ensure efficient airflow and air quality.
Depending on the filter you have, it may be time to change the filter even if you did so in preparation for fall. If you have not yet changed or cleaned your filter, be sure to do so before winter.
Insulate & Seal
? Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing and burst pipes.
? Insulate areas where it may be needed, including the attic, basement, and ceilings.
? Inspect and seal any leaks or gaps in your ductwork to prevent heat loss and improve efficiency.
? Inspect doors and windows for drafts, and seal any gaps with weather stripping or caulking to prevent heat loss.
Adjust Thermostat
? Set your thermostat to energy-efficient temperature settings for different times of the day and night.
? Invest in a programmable or smart thermostat if you don’t have one.
Set Humidity
? Prepare your humidifier if you have one. If not, consider a whole-home humidifier for advanced home comfort and efficiency.
? Adjust the humidity levels in your home for comfort and to prevent issues like dry air and condensation.
Clean Furnace Room
? Clear clutter around your furnace and ensure there are no flammable materials nearby.
? Make sure the furnace room is well-ventilated and safe.
Don’t store items too close to your furnace or heating system, as it can affect its operation and potentially cause safety hazards and/or damage to your system.
Test Furnace
? Turn on your furnace to make sure it’s working properly before the cold weather sets in.
? If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, have it professionally inspected.
Test Detectors & Alarms
? Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working correctly and have fresh batteries.

Check Exterior Equipment
? Check and clean the area around your exterior HVAC unit and vents.
? Keep the area around your outdoor unit free and clear of debris and potential obstructions.
? Drain and store outdoor hoses and shut off exterior water sources.
Clean Gutters
? Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams and water damage.
Trim Trees
? Trim tree branches that could potentially damage your home or HVAC system during winter storms.
Inspect Roof
? Check your roof for damaged shingles or areas that may leak, and repair them as needed.
Seal Cracks
? Inspect the exterior of your home for cracks and gaps, and caulk them to prevent cold air infiltration.
Other Tips
? If you have them, install storm windows and doors for added insulation and protection.
? Assemble an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, blankets, non-perishable food, and a battery-powered radio in case of power outages or severe weather.
? Consider having a backup heat source, such as a space heater or a generator, in case of a power outage.
? Purchase winter essentials such as rock salt or ice melt, snow shovels, and snow removal tools.
