New Grill? 5 Steps You Should Take Before Firing It Up

New grill

Grilling season is just around the corner, and there’s nothing quite like the thrill of unboxing a new grill. But before you toss on your first steak or veggies, it’s important to prep it properly. Taking the time to clean and season your grill ensures safe cooking and longer-lasting performance. Follow these five essential steps to get your grill ready for the season.

1. Wash the Grill Grates

Before using your grill, wash the grates to remove the protective wax coating applied during manufacturing. Place the grates in a bucket of warm water mixed with mild dish soap. Use a sponge or soft cloth to clean all surfaces thoroughly.

2. Scrub the Grill Grates

While the grates are still in the bucket, scrub them with a heavy duty grill brush to remove manufacturing residue. Dump the dirty water after this step.

3. Rinse and Dry Completely

Refill your bucket with clean, hot water and rinse the grates thoroughly. Scrub one more time if needed to make sure all residue is gone. After rinsing, dry the grates immediately using paper towels or a soft cloth. Do not let them air dry or run them through the dishwasher, especially if they are cast iron. Moisture can lead to rust.

4. Season the Grill Grates

Seasoning helps prevent rust and creates a natural nonstick surface. Use a high-heat oil such as canola or vegetable oil. Apply a light, even coat to the entire surface of the grates with a spray bottle or paper towel. Reinstall the grates on your grill and heat it up. Let it run for about 15 minutes until the oil stops smoking. This process seals the surface and prepares it for cooking.

5. Re-season Regularly

New grates need regular re-seasoning to build up a strong, protective coating. If you notice rust forming, that means the seasoning has worn off. Scrub the grates clean, reapply oil, and heat them up again as described in Step 4.

Ongoing Maintenance Tips

  • After each cookout, turn the grill on high to burn off leftover food.
  • Let the grates cool slightly, then clean them with a grill brush.
  • Re-season as needed, usually every few months.
  • Store your grill grates in a dry location.
  • The more you use your grill, the easier it becomes to clean and maintain.
