How to Clean a Rusty Griddle

Clean a rusty griddle

Few things are more frustrating than lifting the lid of your griddle only to find a layer of rust on the cooking surface. Especially if you’ve taken the time to season your griddle properly, seeing rust can feel like a major setback.

The good news is that your griddle isn’t ruined. With the right tools and a little effort, you can clean a rusty griddle and restore it to prime condition.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get your griddle back in action.

What You’ll Need to Clean a Rusty Griddle

Before you start, gather the following tools:

  • Scraper
  • Squirt bottle filled with water
  • Heat-resistant gloves
  • Grill brick (or pumice stone)
  • Seasoning oil (like flaxseed or canola)
  • Paper towels or clean cloths

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Rusty Griddle

Step 1: Warm Up the Griddle

Turn on your griddle and set it to low heat, allowing the surface to reach about 300 to 325°F. Heating the griddle helps loosen rust and makes it easier to clean. This also burns off any leftover debris or old oil.

Safety tip: Put on heat-protectant gloves before handling the griddle at this stage.

Step 2: Scrape Off Loose Rust

Once warm, spray small amounts of water on the griddle surface. The steam helps lift rust and debris.

Use a scraper with light to medium pressure to push the rust and water toward the grease tray.

Tip: Empty the grease tray beforehand since it will fill up quickly with rust and liquid.

Work in small sections, spraying and scraping one area at a time. If some spots are difficult to clean, don’t force them. Those will be handled in the next step.

Step 3: Use a Grill Brick for Tough Spots

Turn off the heat and let the griddle cool slightly. It should still be warm, but not hot. A grill brick works best at this temperature and reduces the chance of burning your hands.

Apply a light layer of oil to the surface to help the brick glide more smoothly. Then rub the brick in circular motions over rusty areas. This process gently sands away stuck-on rust without damaging the griddle surface.

Repeat as needed until the rust is gone.

Step 4: Wipe Down the Surface

Once all rust has been removed, it’s time to clean the griddle thoroughly.

Use soapy water and a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe down the entire cooking surface. Don’t forget to clean the edges, sides, and back panel.

Rinse with clean water to remove soap residue. Dry the griddle completely. If you see any lingering rust, repeat the scraping or brick step as needed.

Step 5: Re-season the Griddle

After cleaning a rusty griddle, seasoning is essential. This step protects the metal and provides a smooth, nonstick surface for cooking.

To season:

  1. Turn the griddle on to medium heat.
  2. Apply a thin coat of oil across the entire surface.
  3. Let it smoke and bond to the metal for 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Repeat the oiling and heating process two or three times.

Tips to Prevent Rust on Your Griddle

Once you’ve put in the work to clean a rusty griddle, taking care of it becomes much easier. Follow these simple habits to prevent future rust buildup:

Season Regularly

A well-seasoned surface acts as a barrier against moisture and corrosion. Re-season every few months, especially if the griddle is not used often or if you notice worn-down areas.

Clean After Each Use

While the griddle is still warm, scrape off food particles and grease. Wipe down with a paper towel or cloth, then apply a thin coat of oil. This locks out moisture and preserves the seasoning.

Store It Properly

Always store your griddle in a dry, covered area like a garage or shed. If you must leave it outdoors, invest in a quality weatherproof cover. Be sure the griddle is clean, dry, and lightly oiled before storing it.

Avoid Harsh Cleaners

Do not use soap, steel wool, or abrasive sponges. These can strip the seasoning and expose raw metal, which is more likely to rust. Stick to gentle scraping and wiping for daily cleaning.
