What to Do Before Calling for Emergency Furnace Repair
Before calling Team Harding for emergency furnace repair, try these first:
Check that the furnace wasn’t accidentally switched off.
There should be an “On/Off” switch near the furnace. Confirm that it’s switched on.
Confirm the batteries in the thermostat aren’t dead.
A thermostat with dead batteries can’t communicate with the furnace.
Ensure your thermostat is set to “HEAT”.
A thermostat set on “COOL” mode could be the issue. Make sure it’s on “HEAT”.
Inspect the filter and change or clean if it’s dirty or clogged.
A clogged or dirty air filter can affect the performance of your furnace.
Make sure the exterior pipes/vents aren’t obstructed.
Obstructions of the outdoor unit can cause your furnace to fail.
If none of these resolve the issue, call for furnace repair.

The key to a long-lasting and healthy furnace is proper and routine maintenance. In addition to scheduling annual maintenance, homeowners should also perform the following tasks.
In Preparation for Winter
- Schedule a professional inspection and tune-up in the fall.
- Check that your thermostat is working correctly and is set to ‘HEAT’.

On a Monthly Basis
- Change or clean the furnace filter.
- Ensure all vents and air registers are open and unobstructed.
- Listen for unusual noises or vibrations coming from the furnace while it’s running.
- Be attentive to any strange odours, such as burning smells.
- Regularly check to ensure the outdoor unit is clear of debris, ice, and snow.
Early Warning Signs of Furnace Failure
Stay warm and safe this winter by being aware of the early warning signs of furnace failure requiring furnace repair. Annual preventative maintenance helps keep your furnace healthy and functioning optimally, but furnace failure can still happen. That’s why it’s best to be mindful of the early warning signs, including:
- Your furnace is over 15 years old
- A higher-than-normal heating bill
- More frequent repairs in the last 2 years
- Your furnace is making strange noises
If you notice any of these signs or think it’s time for a new furnace, get in touch with Team Harding and avoid the expense and stress of a sudden furnace failure with a furnace repair.
