Prevent Costly Repairs: 5 Monthly HVAC Maintenance Tips

monthly HVAC maintenance tips

As an Ottawa HVAC company, we truly understand the harsh realities of Ottawa winters and what they put your heating system through. We see and repair the effects that our brutal winters have on our customers’ HVAC systems. The cold and snow take their toll on heating systems as it is, but neglecting regular maintenance can result in expensive repairs and even system failures. Follow these HVAC maintenance tips to prevent costly repairs.

Change Your Filters

One of the simplest and most important things you can do to maintain your HVAC system is to change your air filters regularly. Depending on the type of filter and the number of people and pets in your home, you may need to change your filter anywhere from once a month to every 3 months

Dirty or clogged air filters restrict airflow, which causes your system to work harder than it should. This leads to higher energy bills. Dirty filters can also damage your system’s internal components and reduce its lifespan. By keeping your air filters clean and fresh, you not only maximize the efficiency and lifespan of your HVAC unit, but you also improve the air quality in your home.

Check the Exterior Unit

Another simple maintenance task you should do regularly is to check the outdoor part of your heating system. The outdoor unit of your HVAC system can become blocked, clogged, and exposed to potential hazards.

Sometimes animals like to make nests or hibernate in or around your exterior unit. Additionally, snow and ice can block or damage the exhaust pipe. Make sure you check your outdoor unit at least once a month for any damage, cut away any foliage, and remove snow or ice accumulation.

Inspect & Clean Ductwork and Vents

Just as your filters and the exterior unit of your HVAC system can become dirty and clogged, so too can your ductwork and vents. That’s why it’s essential to check your system’s ductwork and vents regularly. Have a look to make sure they’re clean and unobstructed. If they’re dirty or blocked, it can reduce airflow and strain your system. This, in turn, causes inefficiency and leads to costly repairs.

Keep your vents and ducts clean by vacuuming them out once a month. Also, consider installing HVAC UV lights to eliminate bacteria and other microorganisms.

Schedule Professional Maintenance

Last but certainly not least, always schedule seasonal tune-ups and annual maintenance. You can take care of the smaller tasks listed above, but you still need a qualified HVAC technician to come and inspect and service your equipment. Of course, you don’t need to do this every month. While we do recommend spring and fall tune-ups, annual maintenance is critical. And if you have a Club Membership, annual inspections and maintenance are free!

As part of an annual tuneup, an HVAC technician will thoroughly inspect and clean your system as well as diagnose any issues before they turn into major repair jobs. This will help ensure your heating system stays in good working condition. Also, manufacturers usually require annual maintenance to maintain warranties.
