How to Prep Your Grill For BBQ Season After a Long Winter

Prep your grill

After a long winter, we’re all eager to fire up the grill and get cooking. But before you do, there are a few important steps to take in order to prep your grill for BBQ season. A well-maintained grill ensures better cooking results, extends the lifespan of your BBQ, and keeps your food safe. Follow these essential steps to get your grill ready for the season!

1. Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need to deep clean and sanitize your grill:

  • Grill brush for cleaning cooking grids
  • Small pail of hot water with dish soap
  • Venturi brush
  • 1/16” drill bit (usually provided when you purchased your grill)
  • Replacement grease cups
  • Spatula
  • Stainless steel cleaner
  • Fine sandpaper

Having these tools on hand will make the cleaning process smoother and more effective.

2. Give Your BBQ a Thorough Scrub

To get your grill spotless, follow these steps:

  • Remove cooking grids and sear plates to access the burners.
  • Detach the burners and clean them thoroughly. Use a venturi brush to clear any blockages and a wire brush to scrub the tops of the burners.
  • Check the burner ports. If they are blocked, carefully clear them with a 1/16” drill bit.
  • Scrape grease from the inside of the base down towards the drip pan using a spatula.
  • Remove and wash the drip pan, replacing the foil grease catcher if necessary.
  • Clean the sear plates and cooking grids with hot soapy water or run them through a dishwasher on a gentle cycle.
  • Wipe down the exterior of the grill with hot soapy water and remove any grease splatters or discoloration.
  • Once everything is dry, apply stainless steel cleaner/polish using a soft cloth, following the grain of the metal for a polished finish.

3. Inspect Hoses and Feed Tubes

After cleaning, visually inspect all hoses and feed tubes for any signs of wear and tear, such as crimps, scratches, or punctures. If you notice any damage, replace the components immediately.

4. Perform a Leak Test

Anytime your grill has been stored for an extended period or if you’re replacing parts, you should conduct a leak test. This simple step ensures there are no gas leaks that could pose safety hazards. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for performing a proper leak test.

5. Check Ignition Parts

Once your grill is clean and reassembled, inspect the ignition system:

  • Reinstall the burners securely.
  • If your grill uses battery-powered ignition, replace old batteries with new ones.
  • Inspect ignition parts.
