Maintaining a clean air conditioner filter is essential for optimal system performance and indoor air quality. And in order to take care of it properly, you have to know where it’s located. However, if you’re like some homeowners, you might not know where your air conditioner filter is. This guide will walk you through locating your AC filter plus offer some other helpful tips.
Where is Your AC Filter?
While it’s referred to as the “AC filter,” the filter isn’t actually inside the air conditioner itself. Instead, it’s typically located in the furnace or air handler, where it filters the air before it enters the HVAC system.
1. Blower
The filter is usually found near the blower; the core of your system’s air circulation. Its exact location depends on your HVAC unit’s orientation:
- Horizontal HVAC Unit: If your furnace is a horizontal unit, you’ll likely find the filter on the intake side, neatly tucked into a sliding rack. This makes for easy access and replacement.
- Vertical HVAC Unit (Airflow Upwards): In vertical units with upward airflow, the filter is typically located in a filter rack beside the furnace. It can be accessed easily without needing to open any blower doors.
- Vertical HVAC Unit (Airflow Downwards/Counterflow): For vertical units with downward airflow (counterflow), the filter is located in a filter rack beside the furnace, before the blower.
2. Air Handler
The other place you may find your AC filter is the air handler. The air handler acts as the central processing unit for your AC system. It’s typically a large metal box situated in your:
- Attic
- Basement
- Utility Closet
Identifying the Air Handler: Look for a prominent metal box with electrical wires and air ducts connected to it.
Finding & Accessing the Filter
On the air handler itself, search for a small access slot (approximately 1-2 inches) on the sides, top, or bottom of the unit. Some compartments might be conveniently labelled for your reference.
Open the access slot, which might be hinged or secured with screws. Once open, you’ll find the air conditioner filter within the compartment.
Filter Maintenance & Care
Regular filter replacement ensures optimal air quality and efficient operation of your AC system. Depending on the type of filter and if you have pets, we recommend checking and changing it every 1-3 months. When you replace your air conditioner filter, you need to replace it with a new one that adheres to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Replace the filter according to the instructions and arrows on the packaging and/or manufacturer guide.
