Big Green Egg Maintenance Guide
Proper maintenance ensures your Big Green Egg stays in top condition and lasts for years. But what’s the best way to take care of it? This guide will walk you through essential maintenance tips for each component.
Maintaining Cast Iron Accessories
What You’ll Need
- Eggmit
- Steel brush
- Vegetable oil
- Silicone brush
Steps
- Place the cast iron into the Big Green Egg.
- Heat up to 250°C for 10 minutes.
- Remove rust using a steel brush.
- Apply vegetable oil with a silicone brush.
- Heat for 60 minutes.
Maintaining the rEGGulator
The rEGGulator is a patented air regulator made from durable cast iron with a silicone handle. It has a rust-preventative coating, so seasoning is unnecessary and can damage it. If your EGG is exposed to the elements, cover it after cooling down. If it appears dull over time, rub on Crisco or vegetable oil while it is still slightly warm.
What You’ll Need
- Soapy water (green soap)
- Scouring pad
- Vegetable oil
- Silicone brush
- Tea towel
Steps
- Remove the rubber cap.
- Clean with soapy water.
- Dry with a tea towel.
- Brush oil on the edges.
Maintaining the Daisy Wheel
If your Big Green Egg has a dual function metal top, perform maintenance once or twice a year to prevent dirt build-up.
What You’ll Need
- Eggmit
- Steel brush
- Vegetable oil
- Silicone brush
- Tea towel
Steps
- Remove rust using a steel brush.
- Insert the convEGGtor, disposable drip pan, and Stainless Steel Grid.
- Insert the Daisy Wheel into the EGG.
- Heat at 250°C for 10 minutes.
- Apply vegetable oil.
- Heat for an additional 30 minutes.
TIP: Do this twice a year to maintain top condition.
Base and Dome Maintenance
- Clean the exterior with soapy water and green soap while slightly warm.
- Maintain the interior by occasionally brushing it with a wire brush or grit 80 sandpaper.

Base and Dome Maintenance
- Clean while slightly warm with a Dual Brush Grid Scrubber.
- Store your EGG immediately after use if you don’t clean it right away.
- Heat it up and clean the grid before cooking next time.
- Cast Iron Grid Special Care: Season it like the dual function metal top. Always use a Grid Lifter and allow it to heat up gradually to prevent cracking.
Maintaining the Frame
- Regularly tighten nuts and bolts if you move your EGG frequently.
- Clean with water and soft soap to improve appearance.

Cleaning the convEGGtor and Baking Stone
What You’ll Need
- Eggmits (2x)
- Grid Scrubber
Steps
- Remove soot from the convEGGtor.
- Place it upside down on the Fire Ring.
- Heat at 250°C for 1 hour.
Replacing the Felt Gasket
Felt cushions and seals the EGG. If it becomes hard, replace it every two years.
What You’ll Need
- Gasket Kit
- Open-ended spanners (13mm and 11mm)
- Tea towels (3x)
- Stanley knife
- Multi-purpose cutters
- Sandpaper (80-grit)
Steps
- Remove the thermometer and springs.
- Loosen the 2 large nuts.
- Remove the rEGGulator and the dome.
- Place tea towels over the base edge and set the dome upside down.
- Remove the old gasket with a Stanley knife.
- Sandpaper the edge and remove glue residue.
- Dust off and securely glue the new gasket.
- Cut to size and ensure proper fit.
TIP: Keep the lid closed for 24 hours before using the EGG again.
Thermometer Calibration
To ensure accurate readings, calibrate the thermometer periodically.
What You’ll Need
- Small pan with boiling water (100°C)
- Glass with ice water (0°C)
- Long skewers
- Adjustable spanner
Steps
- Remove the thermometer from the dome.
- Measure the temperature in boiling water.
- Adjust to 100°C if needed.
- Check in ice water, then recheck in boiling water.
TIP: Repeat the process to ensure accuracy.
Heat Until White? No Need!
There’s a misconception that the Big Green Egg must be heated until white. However:
- Extreme heat can damage the gasket and hinge.
- 30 minutes at 275°C is enough to burn off grease and dirt.
- The ceramic will remain dark, which is normal.
Maintaining the Hinge and Band
The steel hinge expands and contracts with temperature changes. Check and tighten it regularly.
What You’ll Need
- Open-ended spanners (11mm and 2x 13mm)
- WD-40
- Tea towel
Steps
- Apply WD-40 to the hinges.
- Tighten the screws on the band.
- Tighten the hinge screws using open-ended and socket spanners.
- Tighten the angled screws on the back.
Fire Bowl and Fire Ring
These components require no maintenance. Occasionally remove them to clear out ash.
