AC Troubleshooting Checklist
Before calling for emergency AC service, try these simple checks to see if you can diagnose the problem with your unit:
Check the Thermostat Setting
Ensure the thermostat is set to “Cool” and the desired temperature is lower than the current room temperature.
Battery Check
Replace the thermostat batteries if they are dead or older than 1 year.
Furnace Switch
Locate the furnace switch (usually near the basement stairs or door to the furnace room) and ensure it’s turned on.
Air Filter
Inspect the furnace filter. Replace or clean it if it’s dirty, clogged or it’s been over a month since the last change.
Fan Operation
Verify the furnace fan is running with the HRV off and the thermostat fan set to “Auto.” This indicates the thermostat is calling for AC.
Breaker Check
Locate the double breaker marked “A/C” in your breaker panel and ensure it’s turned on.
Water Leaks
If water is leaking from the furnace, turn it off for 24 hours to allow thawing.
Frozen Pipes/Ductwork
If ice is present on the pipes or ductwork, the unit needs to thaw for 24-48 hours before a service call. Accurate diagnosis is impossible with a frozen system.
Rental Unit
If your equipment is an Enercare rental, please contact the rental company directly for service.
Emergency Air Conditioning Repair FAQs
When is air conditioner repair required?
Here are some telltale signs that indicate AC repair may be required:
- Strange Noises or Smells
- Uneven Cooling
- Increased Energy Costs and Consumption
- Warm Air Coming from Registers
- No Air Coming from Registers
- Refrigerant Leaks
Why is no cold air coming from the AC?
If there’s no cold air coming from your AC, it could be due to:
- Thermostat malfunction: Ensure it’s set to “cool” mode.
- Tripped breakers: Check both indoor and outdoor unit breakers.
- Clogged air filter: Clean or replace the filter regularly.
- Low refrigerant: This often requires professional repair.
- Other issues: If the above don’t apply, professional inspection is recommended.
Why is my AC not turning on?
There could be several reasons why our AC won’t turn on. Troubleshoot the issue with these tips, and if none of them correct the issue, contact us immediately:
- Thermostat Issues: Check if it’s set to “cool” and the desired temperature is lower than the current room temperature. Dead batteries or a faulty thermostat can also prevent it from sending the “on” signal.
- Tripped Breaker: Locate the circuit breaker for your AC unit and ensure it’s in the “on” position. Overloaded circuits can trip the breaker, cutting power to the AC.
- Clogged Air Filter: A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing the system to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution. Clean or replace the filter regularly.
- Other Issues: Faulty components like the capacitor, compressor, or electrical wiring can also prevent the AC from starting.
How come my entire home is cool except for one room?
One room staying warm while the rest of your house is cool can be caused by several factors, including blocked vents, ductwork issues, closed vents in other rooms, an old air conditioner, a malfunctioning AC, poor insulation, too much sunlight exposure, or another issue. Verify that none of these are the cause and give us a call for a definitive diagnosis.
How much does it cost to repair an AC unit in Kanata?
Whether you need urgent, emergency repair or schedule regular service will affect the overall cost. Plus, there are a variety of factors that affect the cost of AC repair in Kanata. These include:
- Type of repair: Simple fixes will cost less than replacing a major component like the compressor.
- Parts needed: A significant factor in determining the cost of your AC repair has to do with the parts required.
- Membership status: Having a Harding Club Membership can help reduce the overall cost of AC repair.
One of our technicians must perform an in-home inspection in order to provide you with an accurate estimate.
When do I know when it’s time to replace my system?
Here are some signs that it might be time to replace your air conditioner:
- Age: Air conditioners over 10 years old are more likely to need replacement.
- Safety Concerns: If your AC poses any safety risks like carbon monoxide leaks or fire hazards, immediate replacement is crucial.
- Rising Costs: If your AC is inefficient and leading to significantly higher energy bills, replacing it with a newer, more efficient model could save you money in the long run.
- Performance Issues: If your AC isn’t cooling your home evenly or consistently, it might be nearing the end of its lifespan.

When Is It Time to Replace Your AC Unit?
Not sure if it’s time to replace your AC unit or not? We’ll help you decide whether you should simply fix your air conditioner or get a new one.
Here are some key indicators that it’s time to replace your AC unit:
Age
Air conditioners typically last 10-15 years. If your unit is approaching, or is beyond this age range, it may be time to replace it.
More Frequent Breakdowns
If you find yourself calling Team Harding for repairs all the time, it’s probably more cost-effective to replace your AC unit rather than continually repairing it.
Rising Energy Bills
Are your utility bills higher than normal? As air conditioners age, they become less efficient and require more energy to operate. If you’ve noticed a steady increase in your energy bills, it could be due to an inefficient AC unit in need of replacement.
Uneven Cooling
If some rooms in your home are consistently warmer than others, it may be a sign that your AC unit is no longer able to effectively cool your entire home.
Excessive Noise
If your AC unit is making loud or unusual noises, it may be an indication of internal problems that could be costly to repair. It might be time to get a new unit.
R-22 Refrigerant
If your AC unit still uses R-22 refrigerant, also known as Freon, it’s definitely time to replace it. R-22 is being phased out due to its harmful impact on the environment, and its production has been banned since 2020.
