July 20th was national hotdog day and at Team Harding, we had a great time showing our readers some of our favourite unique hotdog ideas. The fun doesn’t have to stop in August, however, because August 25th is national burger day! Take a look at how to first, perfectly cook a hamburger, and second, what amazing topping combos you can add for a personal flare! Happy national burger day and happy grilling!
First: Make Your Burger
Before you can start being creative with toppings and create delicious burger combinations, it’s important to start with a good base. Cooking the perfect burger will make any toppings you choose even more delicious and complimentary. Here’s what you need to grill the perfect burger for national burger day.
Ingredients
- Six raw burger patties, homemade or store-bought are both fine
- Your preferred cheese
- Six white sesame seed burger buns
Grilling Instructions
- Preheat the grill to 450 to 500°F
- Place patties on the grill and cook to your desired doneness
- Rare: 4 minutes total
- Medium rare: 5 minutes total
- Medium: 6 to 7 minutes total
- Well done: 8 to 9 minutes total
- Add cheese about one minute before the patty is done cooking
- Lightly toast buns
- Take the cooked patty off the grill and let rest for one to two minutes before serving
Second: Choose Your Toppings
Now that the work is out of the way, you can build your perfectly grilled burger with whatever toppings you please! Here are some of our favourite topping combinations below!

Prepare as directed and top with:

- Onion

BBQ Bacon Burger
Prepare as directed and top with:
- Lettuce
- Bacon
- BBQ sauce
- Fried onion rings
- Havarti Cheese
- Avocado
The Elvis
Prepare as directed and top with:
- Bacon
- Peanut butter
- Havarti cheese
Nacho Burger
Prepare as directed and top with:
- Tortilla chips
- Tex Mex cheese
- Tomato
- Red onion
- Yellow corn
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
Homestyle Mac Burger
Prepare as directed and top with:
- Homemade mac and cheese
- Cheddar cheese
- Mozzarella
- Bacon
- Bread crumbs
Sunny Side-Up Burger
Prepare as directed and top with:
- Bacon or sausage strips
- Hashbrown
- Sunny side-up egg
- Green onion
- Tomato
