Fireplace maintenance is crucial to keeping your fireplace working efficiently and safely. In addition to having it professionally serviced, you should also clean it as needed, including the glass. Fortunately, it’s easy and you don’t need to do it that often. Here’s how to do it.
How To Clean the Glass on Your Fireplace with Glass Cleaner
What you’ll need:
- Fireplace Glass Cleaner
- 2 Microfiber Cloths
- Soft padded surface (to place the glass)
- Tools to remove glass
When you’ve gathered everything you need, follow these steps:
- Remove the glass door from your fireplace, following manufacturer’s instructions.
- Place the glass on the soft padded surface.
- Apply a generous amount of glass cleaner.
- Rub the glass cleaner into the glass with one microfiber cloth.
- Wipe and buff the glass cleaner with the second cloth.
Notes:
- Make sure you’re using an approved fireplace glass cleaner or non-amonia based glass cleaner so you don’t damage the glass or create noxious fumes when you use the fireplace.
- Don’t clean the glass when it’s hot.
- If you can’t remove the glass, you can still clean it while it’s attached to the fireplace.
How To Remove Tough Stains
While you can use an approved fireplace glass cleaner or even vinegar and water to clean the glass on your fireplace, the best way to clean it is to use a bit of ash and newspaper! This mixture will easily cut through the buildup on the glass.
Here’s how to do it:
- Get some newspaper and crumple it up.
- Get some of the newspaper damp.
- Dip the newspaper into some ashes.
- Rub the ash onto the glass in a circular motion.
- Wipe away film with another piece of newspaper or a microfiber cloth.
Tips:
- You could mix the ash and water beforehand. There is no exact mixture.
- Add some vinegar to the mixture to remove smudges and smears.
