Baking Soda: The BBQ & Outdoor Kitchen Miracle Cleaner

Baking soda isn’t just for baking cakes; it’s a powerful and versatile cleaning agent for your (indoor or outdoor) kitchen and even your grill! Here are some tips and tricks for cleaning your cooking space with the magical power of baking soda.

The Many Uses of Baking Soda: From Your Kitchen to Your Grill

Clean Kitchen Surfaces

Cutting Boards & Pots & Pans

Sprinkle some baking soda on your cutting board to clean and deodorize it. Similarly, scorch marks on pots and pans can be removed by sprinkling baking soda and scrubbing with a mixture of water and dish soap.

Countertops & Appliances

When it comes to countertops, appliances, and walls, baking soda can work wonders. However, be cautious with stainless steel surfaces, as baking soda may cause scratches. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first. You can also use baking soda to freshen up your fridge and microwave interior—just remember to rinse surfaces afterward.

For oven cleaning, create a paste of baking soda, water, and dish soap, apply it to the oven surfaces, and let it sit before wiping clean.

Clean (Inside) Your Grill

Baking soda can also work wonders on your grill – but not the exterior. Baking soda is not recommended for the exterior, especially for stainless steel finishes, as it can cause scratching or staining if not rinsed away thoroughly. Instead, opt for a mixture of dish soap and warm water, applied with a soft cloth, to remove any greasy residues.

The burners, sear plates, tub, and grids are designed to withstand high temperatures and heavy use, making them perfect candidates for a baking soda cleaning. Start by removing the cooking grids and sear plates, then sprinkle baking soda throughout the interior of your grill. Next, spray with a mixture of vinegar and water to create a foaming action that helps lift away grease and grime. After allowing the mixture to sit for 5-15 minutes, scrub the interior with a brush or cloth, then rinse thoroughly. With baking soda, you can keep the inside of your grill clean and ready for your next barbecue adventure!

*For sear plates and cooking grids, a sprinkle of baking soda and soapy water should do the trick. Be sure to re-season your cast iron cooking grids as soon as they’re dry. Keep in mind: this is not recommended for unseasoned cast iron.

Bonus Baking Soda Use

If you experience a grease fire on the grill, grab the baking soda and easily put it out!
