Introducing SmartFlow from Enbridge Sustain
Enbridge’s SmartFlow system makes choosing a cleaner energy solution easy.
SmartFlow integrates a smart thermostat with the efficiency of a heat pump and the reliability of your furnace. With smart controls, intelligent switching and scheduling, humidifier control and maintenance reminders, it proactively thinks about how to keep your home comfortable while lowering energy costs and emissions, so you don’t have to.
The Enbridge mobile app lets you prioritize cost savings, energy savings, or a combination of both. Choose budget mode for the most cost-effective energy source, eco mode for minimal environmental impact or balanced mode for a mix that considers both budget and sustainability.
How Does SmartFlow Help Lower Home Energy Costs?
By switching from conventional HVAC to SmartFlow, you can optimize your home’s energy consumption. SmartFlow intelligently adjusts your heating and cooling systems based on outdoor temperatures and utility prices, ensuring you maintain year-round comfort while minimizing energy costs.
1. An electric heat pump provides heat when temperatures are moderate and electricity prices are low.
2. When temperatures drop or electricity prices rise, the system automatically switches between the heat pump and condensing natural gas furnace to prioritize efficiency and energy cost savings.
3. During warmer weather, the system will operate as a high efficiency air conditioner to keep indoor air cool. This transfer of energy balances the goals of lowering home energy emissions and costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hybrid HVAC?
It’s a hybrid heating and cooling system that pairs an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace. The heat pump works to heat and cool your home efficiently until the outside temperature drops significantly and the system proactively switches to your furnace.
What is the lowest temperature that heat pumps can function in?
Depending on the specific equipment in use, heat pumps can operate all the way down to between -25 and -30 degrees Celsius. However, the colder it gets, the less efficient it becomes for the heat pump to heat your home, since the amount of heat it generates decreases as the outdoor temperature drops.
How does a heat pump compare to an air conditioner?
A heat pump looks like a conventional AC unit, with the addition of a stand that keeps the outdoor unit away from any snow and ice on the ground. The key difference is that a heat pump not only cools your home in the summer but can also heat it in the winter!
How much can I save on my gas bill by using a hybrid heating system?
There isn’t one number for everyone. The amount you’ll save depends on a range of factors, including the efficiency of the heat pump, the age and efficiency of your furnace, outdoor temperatures and the set point where the system switches. Depending on local weather, you could heat your home exclusively with electricity using the heat pump, while during more frigid conditions you might only use your gas furnace.
Do I have to replace all of my current equipment?
No. If your furnace is in good condition, you can simply replace your air conditioner with a heat pump that will work in conjunction with the furnace for a reliable, all-season home energy system. Our innovative hybrid HVAC system and thermostat can be integrated with almost any existing furnace model.
How do the Enbridge Sustain controls work?
Taking local conditions, your current equipment configurations and your preferences into consideration, the integrated thermostat and smart controls built into our innovative hybrid HVAC system ensure that you’re heating and cooling your home as efficiently as possible, all year long. SmartFlow from Enbridge Sustain proactively thinks about how to keep your home comfortable while lowering energy costs and emissions, so you don’t have to.
Why is hybrid HVAC more expensive than a regular air conditioner and furnace?
More advanced than a conventional AC unit, an air-source heat pump has additional technology built in, which allows it to provide reliable high efficiency air conditioning in the summer as well as heating in the winter. With no upfront cost to install a hybrid HVAC system from Enbridge Sustain and studies showing homeowners enjoyed energy savings of up to 30%, the benefits outweigh any difference in price over the long-term.
What happens when I sell my home?
There’s nothing to worry about. If you’re renting the equipment, the terms and agreement will be transferred to the new owners when you sell your home. Your real estate lawyer will handle the details of this process once the sale of your home is completed.
Can I stop renting and buy out my heat pump instead?
Yes, if you decide you want to own the equipment rather than rent it, you can buy it out at any time. Before doing so, be sure to read the terms listed in your rental agreement.
